Texas: Electricity use Sunday night shattered a previous record set in 2018 as extreme cold weather and frozen precipitation blanketed the entire state, crippled transportation and put most of the state below freezing.

The state’s electric grid operator lost control of the power supply Monday morning as 2 million Texas households didn’t have heat or other electric appliances working at home while a massive winter storm delivered freezing temperatures across the state.
When the state’s grid operator, the Electric Reliability Council of Texas, began implementing rolling blackouts at 1:25 a.m. Monday, the outages were intended to be implemented on a rolling basis — up to 45 minutes per affected area, according to the ERCOT.
Instead, some Texans in Austin, Houston and other cities were without power into Monday afternoon and all morning since even before ERCOT called for the rolling blackouts. And some companies that deliver electricity to households and businesses have told customers to expect to be without power through at least the end of the day as they work to restore power generating units that went offline during the storm.

HOUSTON — Officials in Houston say massive power outages across Texas because of a winter storm knocked out electricity to a facility storing over 8,000 doses of Moderna’s coronavirus vaccine.
The outages forced Houston health officials Monday to scramble to distribute the doses before they went bad. More than 2 million people across Texas are without power after a massive storm system dropped temperatures into single digits as far south as San Antonio.

* WHAT: Dangerous wind chills, blowing snow, and additional heavy
snow.
* SNOW AMOUNTS: Six to ten inches of additional snow is expected.
* WIND CHILLS: Wind chill values from zero to 20 below zero at
times.
* WHEN: Dangerous cold will occur through at least Tuesday morning
with blowing snow. Heavy snow is in the forecast Tuesday night
through Thursday morning.
* WHERE: Northern and central Arkansas.
* IMPACTS: Prolonged exposure could cause damage to exposed skin
in 30 minutes or less. The cold air will also impact young
livestock and pets. Snow and blowing snow will make travel
dangerous. The weight of too much snow may compromise some roofs
of homes and businesses.
The National Weather Service said the storm was expected to bring “frigid arctic air,” record-setting snowfall and “dangerously cold wind chills” from coast to coast through at least Tuesday. The brutally cold weather has led to emergency declarations in at least seven states from the Northwest to the South, including Oregon, Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi, as well as tornado watches along the Gulf Coast.
