According to Brampton Mayor Patrick Brown, the Peel Regional Police won’t be enforcing the new provincial regulations around vaccine passports.

The information came to light during an exclusive interview with insauga.com publisher Khaled Iwamura broadcast on Instagram Live.

“Peel police told me they wouldn’t be enforcing it. I spoke to the chief, and he told me he doesn’t have the resources,” said Brown.

“He’s not going to take people off a gun or gang or domestic assault case to attend to a vaccine certificate issue.”

Brown said enforcement will then fall to local bylaw enforcement officers.

“But bylaw department doesn’t have the resources for this either.”

Brown said he talked with provincial officials this week asking what the plan for funding enforcement is.

“You can’t just tell people to call local police or bylaw and have no plan to enforce it. So there is an enforcement problem now. The provincial government has downloaded that responsibility to municipalities and it would be naive to suggest there are police or bylaw officers twiddling their thumbs with nothing to do.”

Brown said police and bylaw officers are already too busy to deal with things like petty thefts. “They’ll tell you to just call your insurance company because they don’t have the officers available.

They’re working on other, more serious, issues.”
